We're Fighting Hunger in Maine with Manpower & Financial Support
Evergreen Credit Union team members volunteered at a food pickup site organized by Youth Full Maine, a York-County-based nonprofit dedicated to distributing food to children and families in the region through in-school food pantries and free mobile food distribution programs.
The credit union handed out free food and supplies to Biddeford families in need during a Youth Full Maine mobile free distribution event on August 19. During these events, food recipients drive to the distribution location and, while the recipients stay in their cars, volunteers fill bags with standard food items, including fresh fruits and vegetables.
“When I distributed food with Youth Full Maine the first time, I was surprised not only by how well it worked, but how fresh the fruits and vegetables were,” said Cole Rowland, Vice President of the Youth Full Maine Board of Directors and Creative Specialist at Evergreen Credit Union. “Youth Full Maine is bringing healthy meals to families in a time where Maine’s hunger crisis is at an all-time high.”
According to the 2024 Feeding America Meal Gap study, 12.5% of the population in York County, ME is food insecure and the average cost of a meal is $4.22. Among the state of Maine’s population, 14.3% of Mainers (over 203,000 people) experienced food insecurity according to a case study from Good Shephard Food Bank and Feeding America.
At the end of the food distribution event, Evergreen Credit Union presented a $2,000 donation to Youth Full Maine. "Evergreen has been a really wonderful partner for us since we met some of their wonderful workers a few years ago, who have been rolling up their sleeves and getting to work. This is the kind of partnership that is leading by example,” said Katie Brown, Executive Director of Youth Full Maine.
