3 Password Tips to Protect Your Information
Weak passwords make it easy for scammers to gain access to your online accounts that hold personal or financial information. Online banking accounts, social media and streaming services are all potential targets for scammers. Creating strong passwords is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect yourself against fraud.
Below are three easy tips for making strong passwords, as well as an explanation of why starting and maintaining good password habits are important to your financial wellness.
Why Strong Passwords Are Important
Strong passwords act like a lock on your digital front door. When passwords are weak or reused, it’s easier for hackers to access your accounts, steal personal information, or commit fraud.
Using strong, unique passwords helps:
- Protect your money and personal information
- Reduce the risk of identity theft
- Keep your online accounts secure, even if one site is breached
For financial accounts especially, a compromised password can lead to unauthorized transactions, identity theft, and hours of stressful cleanup.
1. Make Passwords Long and Unique
One of the best ways to strengthen a password is simply to make it longer. Short passwords are easier for attackers to guess or crack using automated tools.
Tips for stronger length and uniqueness:
- Aim for at least 12–16 characters (including letters and punctuation)
- Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts
- Don’t include personal details like your name, birthday, or hometown
A long, unique password makes it much harder for anyone to gain unauthorized access, especially to sensitive accounts like online banking or credit cards.
2. Use a Mix of Characters, Phrases, and Words
Strong passwords combine different types of characters, making them harder to guess.
Include a mix of:
- Uppercase letters
- Lowercase letters
- Numbers
- Special characters (like !, %, or #)
Instead of a single word, try using a passphrase (a string of unrelated words with numbers or symbols added). For example, Consider your high school’s mascot “Rams”, the last 2 digits of your phone number as a child “34” and your favorite color, “pink”. These can be combined to Rams34Pink. With special characters, this could look like: r@m$34p!nk. This important layer of protection can defend against common hacking techniques.
3. Use a Password Manager (and Avoid Writing Them Down)
Remembering dozens of strong passwords can feel overwhelming. Password managers securely store your passwords and can even generate strong ones for you.
Password managers help because they:
- Encourage unique passwords for every account
- Reduce the temptation to reuse or simplify passwords
- Store information securely behind one strong master password
Avoid writing passwords on sticky notes or saving them in unprotected files. A reputable password manager keeps everything organized and secure in one place.
If an account offers multi-factor authentication (MFA), turn it on. MFA adds an extra step (like a code sent to your phone, for example) so even if someone gets your password, they still can’t get in.
A Small Step That Makes a Big Difference
Strong passwords may seem like a small detail, but they play a big role in protecting your financial health. Taking a few minutes to strengthen your passwords today can help prevent major headaches down the road.
